Spring Edition

Welcome to spring in the White Mountains - when the landscape awakens from winter and transforms into a world of fresh blooms, flowing rivers, and crisp mountain air. This is a season of renewal. Waterfalls run stronger, trails feel quieter, and fields begin to burst with color. It’s the perfect time to slow down, reconnect with nature, and experience a softer, more intimate side of Lumen.

Day 1

4PM – Check-In & Spring Awakening at Lumen

Arrive at Lumen Nature Retreat and settle into your cabin or tent as the mountains come alive with the energy of spring.

Take a slow walk around the property—notice the first wildflowers pushing through the forest floor, the sound of rushing streams fed by snowmelt, and the crisp scent of pine in the cool air. Spring here feels intimate and grounding, offering a quieter kind of beauty before the summer crowds arrive.

6PM – Dinner at The Common Man

A White Mountains institution since 1985, The Common Man in Lincoln has earned its reputation visit after visit. Step into a cozy, rustic-chic dining room complete with a fieldstone fireplace and warm ambiance, and dig into American comfort classics with New England flair — lobster chowder, steak tips, prime rib, homemade baked mac and cheese. Complimentary cheese, crackers, and warm bread arrive at your table before you've even decided what to order.

Hours: Mon–Thu 4:00–9:00 PM · Fri 4:00–9:30 PM · Sat–Sun from 4:00 PM

9PM – Fireside Under the Stars

Back at camp, the smokeless firepit is calling. Spring evenings carry a fresh bite in the air — perfect weather for layering up and sitting close to the fire. The skies over the White Mountains are remarkably clear on spring nights, with the Milky Way making its seasonal return. Pull up an Adirondack chair, share stories, and let the brook and the crackle of fire do their work.

If relaxation is the priority, the bathhouse is steps away — hot showers and premium toiletries to ease you into deep, mountain sleep.

Day 2

9AM - Breakfast at Flapjacks Pancake House

A Lincoln legend. Flapjacks has been fueling hikers, skiers, and White Mountain wanderers since 2004 — homemade buttermilk pancakes topped with maple butter and real New Hampshire maple syrup, cooked to fluffy perfection. Keep an eye out for the model train that runs the perimeter of the dining room, a detail that never gets old. Arrive early; the line forms fast on weekends.

Hours: Open Thursday–Monday · Closed Tuesday–Wednesday · Opens at 7:00 AM

10AM – Rail Biking with Granite State Railway

One of New Hampshire's most unexpectedly wonderful experiences — and it opens in spring. Board a custom four-person rail bike at the historic Laconia Railroad Station (opened 1892) and pedal along a rail line dating back to 1848. Your route passes through downtown Laconia, across a trestle bridge over the Winnipesaukee River, and alongside the shimmering shore of Lake Winnisquam — New Hampshire's fourth largest lake.

The 5-mile round trip takes about 90 minutes and ends with private lake access at the turnaround point. In spring, wildflowers wave from the track edges and the air carries that particular freshness that only arrives in May and early June.

Good to know: Open May through October · Bikes seat 4 riders · Closed-toe shoes required · Book ahead at GSScenic.com · 15 Veterans Square, Laconia

1PM – Lunch at Woodstock Inn Brewery

Head back toward Woodstock for lunch at the beloved Woodstock Inn Brewery. Live music, New Hampshire-brewed craft beers, and a lively atmosphere make it the perfect mid-day stop. On a warm spring day, the outdoor Dam Bar — built from downed beaver trees and salvaged wood — is an unbeatable spot to refuel after a morning on the rails.

2:30PM - Lupine Fields of Sugar Hill

This is what spring in the White Mountains is all about. Sugar Hill is known as New Hampshire's lupine capital — and in early June, the fields transform into a rolling sea of purple, pink, white, and sky blue spires rising against the Franconia, Presidential, and Kinsman Mountain ranges.

Drive Sunset Hill Road for the iconic view, with the white steeple of St. Matthew's Chapel rising from a sea of blooms. The protected field here offers sweeping panoramas east to the White Mountains and west to Vermont's Green Mountains. Loop Pearl Lake Road and Lovers Lane — lupines around every bend. Stop at Harman's Cheese & Country Store, which runs a daily bloom blog during season.

Peak season: Early to mid-June · Best light: afternoon golden hour · Always respect posted property signs

5PM - Littleton & Schilling Beer

Make your way to Littleton, a charming town at the northern edge of the White Mountains. Stroll the antique shops and walk the beautiful river path — the kind of early evening wander that makes you feel like you've discovered a place all your own. Spring gives Littleton a particular magic, with the Ammonoosuc River running high below.

End the evening at Schilling Beer Co., a modern European-inspired craft brewery set inside a restored 18th-century mill on the river. Czech-inspired lagers, mixed-fermentation ales, and wood-fired pizza — on a warm spring evening, the riverside terrace is as good as it gets.

9PM - The Sauna Awaits

Return to Lumen and book the private sauna. Spring evenings have a cool, damp quality that makes the contrast of warmth even more delicious — step in, let the heat do its work, then step out into the fresh mountain air. Sleep will come easy tonight.

Day 3

8AM - Breakfast at Moon Cafe & Bakery

A morning ritual worth building your last day around. Moon Cafe & Bakery serves up breakfast sandwiches, homemade pastries, energizing smoothies, and excellent coffee in a cozy space that feels like a neighborhood secret. Try the vegan brownies — they're remarkable.

9AM - Flume Gorge

Spring is the best time to walk Flume Gorge. The 2-mile self-guided loop runs past waterfalls thundering at their spring peak, over covered bridges slick with mist, and beneath granite walls draped in fresh new growth. Allow 1.5–2 hours and bring layers — it's cooler and wetter inside the gorge, and all the more dramatic for it.

Opens May 8 · Adults $18 online / $21 at window · Ages 6–12: $16 online / $19 at window · Daily 9AM–5PM

12PM - Lunch at Black Mtn. Burger Co.

A Lincoln staple for brilliant burgers and brews. Thick, juicy Black Angus patties grilled over an open flame, creative toppings, homemade chili, and mac and cheese balls that have achieved local legend status. Pair it all with one of 50+ craft beers and ciders on tap. Call ahead to get on the waitlist — this place fills up fast.

Hours: Daily 11:30 AM–8:30 PM · Closed Wednesdays · 264 Main St, Lincoln

1PM - Basin Cascade Trailhead

A perfect final hike. The Basin is a stunning glacial pothole carved smooth by the Pemigewasset River over 25,000 years — in spring, the flow is at its most dramatic and the sound is extraordinary. From the Basin, the Cascade Brook Trail continues up through a series of beautiful cascades framed by moss-covered rock and budding forest.

Take your time, wade in if the mood strikes, and let the sound of the water wash the last of the city out of your bones.

Bonus: 5PM - Covered Bridge Farm Table

End it here. Perched above the Pemigewasset River alongside the historic Blair Covered Bridge, Covered Bridge Farm Table's farm-to-table menu shines in spring — dishes built around the season's earliest arrivals, with views of the river running high and golden in the evening light. The perfect farewell to the White Mountains.

Good to know: Dinner from 4:30 PM · Bar menu until 10 PM · Closed Tuesdays

Spring won't wait. Neither should you.

The lupines bloom for only a few precious weeks. The rail bikes open in May. The gorges run full and thundering through June. This season at Lumen is fleeting, glorious, and unlike any other — come find out for yourself.
